The nominees were selected from 500 projects and 100 best practices from 20 different countries. The winners were announced at the International LUMA StarT gala\u00a0at the University of Tampere on the 5th of June 2018. The awards were handed by Olli-Pekka Heinonen, the Director General of the Finnish National Agency for Education. The helmet measures for example the temperature, humidity and gas content of the surrounding air. They also prepared and presented a talk in English to an international group and created an educational mystery path, #biopath, about bioeconomy for other students. The kindergarten students learnt through inquiry how their dish is prepared. The project includes e.g. a national science fair and associated teacher training, clubs and training for different age groups and field trips for families.<\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"LUMA StarT winner 2018, Innovation for Creativity Development Association, Jordan\" width=\"770\" height=\"433\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/vvjlv3DLgdM?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p><strong><span lang=\"en-US\">MEF Middle School, Simge Sohtorik, Turkey<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The project started from the concepts of <span lang=\"en-US\">ratio and proportion. The students create<\/span><span lang=\"en-US\">d<\/span><span lang=\"en-US\"> products containing the golden ratio, combining arts with mathematics, and determine<\/span><span lang=\"en-US\">d<\/span><span lang=\"en-US\"> a sale price for each. The products <\/span><span lang=\"en-US\">were<\/span><span lang=\"en-US\"> then <\/span><span lang=\"en-US\">sold<\/span><span lang=\"en-US\"> at a fair, <\/span><span lang=\"en-US\">and the proceeds donate to <\/span><span lang=\"en-US\">an institution chosen by the students.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"LUMA StarT nominee 2018, MEF Middle School, Turkey\" width=\"770\" height=\"433\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/uHakHHNQv5k?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p><strong>Preschool group Puuhiset Satulaiva, Kirsi Rehunen, Finland<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>In this project, research is approached from a viewpoint that to children seems familiar and non-threatening \u2013 fairytales. First, preschoolers and their parents familiarized themselves with what a researcher needs. During the project, children worked on the topic in groups and then presented their project to each other and parents. (Save Our Species) <\/span><span lang=\"en-US\">is a volunteer-based project targeting schools from kindergarten to high school, researching endangered species and their local wetland habitats, aiming to improve their conditions. The activities include field trips, water quality measurements, data analysis and building miniature ecosystems. The participating schools <\/span><span lang=\"en-US\">collaborate<\/span><span lang=\"en-US\"> with each other, <\/span><span lang=\"en-US\">municipalities, associations and universities in their local area. <\/span><span lang=\"en-US\">The students also create <\/span><span lang=\"en-US\">documentaries, scientific designs <\/span><span lang=\"en-US\">and<\/span><span lang=\"en-US\"> experimental projects, posters as well as arts and drama works, stories, songs and exhibitions.<br \/>\n<\/span><\/p>\n<p>Nilg\u00fcn Erentay\u2019s further commitment: <a href=\"http:\/\/www.scienceonstageturkey.org\/\">Main NSC Science on Stage Turkey<\/a><\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"LUMA StarT nominee 2018, S.O.S.
